Greater Tokyo is the intersection of three tectonic plates (Philippine Plate, the Eurasian plate and the North American Plate) and one of the most seismically active regions of the world. This region was called the Ring of Fire. On average, an earthquake felt every day. Most, however, are negligible.
Some, however, are extremely virulent: 1 September 1923 kills, the great Kanto earthquake, more than 140,000 people and has almost 2 million people homeless. Its size was measured at 7.9 on the Richter scale. This phenomenon can be explained if the three tectonic plates of the lack of inertia, has published an excessive accumulation of energy, and once in motion, was the source of the devastating earthquake. When all three plates were colliding, which is not realistic, but possible, the energy would be released, so nothing to resist destruction.
According to the research group of Tokyo-team, a strong earthquake occurs every 400 years. It would 0th 5% chance that such a quake will occur within 30 years. It would, however, 30% chance that a less violent earthquake that will cause significant damage occurs in the same period continues. The earthquake has been the most violent in recent years, in 2005 and was a magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale, panic but no injuries and only moderate damage.
Tokyo has the latest technological advances in the prevention of the earthquake, such as high-tech building on gigantic steel springs are based most of the seismic waves absorb, and the risk of collapse. Despite these devices, the strength of an earthquake would cause great turn seven losses, both human and material.
